Legal Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence Program: Supporting Survivors through Legal Advocacy
Survivors of domestic violence have endured more than enough. Navigating a complex and often confusing legal system should not be another barrier on their path to safety and stability.
The Legal Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence Program at Legal Action of Wisconsin is dedicated to ensuring survivors do not have to face their legal challenges alone. In partnership with domestic violence agencies, the program offers free representation, advice, and resources to assist survivors as they navigate their legal needs.
Much of the work centers around family law issues, including divorce, custody and placement, paternity, and restraining orders. The team also assists clients with related needs such as establishing safe housing and accessing critical public benefits. The program’s attorneys and paralegals bring a holistic approach to their work, seeking to empower their clients to make decisions and reclaim their safety and financial stability.
Katie Alft, Managing Attorney for the Legal Action of Wisconsin’s Green Bay and Oshkosh offices, is passionate about creating an environment where clients feel safe, heard, and supported. “Legal services are built on trust, and we work with people who are often disempowered, doubted, or ignored,” said Katie. “On top of this, people rarely seek legal services during easy moments—they come when something important, stressful, or uncertain is happening in their lives. That creates a unique responsibility and opportunity to earn their confidence.”
The Women’s Fund Impact
Support from the Women’s Fund allows the Legal Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence Program to serve more people in Brown and Kewaunee counties. This support creates greater safety and stability for some of the community’s most vulnerable residents.
